Weekley Rovers 2 v Earls Barton 4
27th September 2009 |

Good start to the season with an impressive first game. Unfortunately, most of us were having a good catch up on the sidelines so over to match reporter Tina Graziano for the bulk of the report. Earls Barton really played well in the first half and produced some really good football. Having most of the play and attacking well, was it not for some good clearances from Weekley we could have been 5 nil up quite early on in the game. Earls Barton did manage to score within the first 3 minutes of the game when the Weekley defence panicked and put the ball pass their own keeper. Keets made it 2 with an excellent goal from 20 yards out. The Barton boys piled on the pressure and an excellent cross in from the right hand side outside the box was aiming towards Wojtek to slot home, when the Weekley defender got to it first and slotted it in to the net – poor old Wojtek, he was destined to score that one. However, it didn’t matter Earls Barton were 3 nil up at half time. Quite early into the 2nd half there was an attack from Weekley and Rhys was picking the ball out the back of his net for the first time. Although Earls Barton were still attacking well, Weekley also had chances, but a team effort from Earls Barton ensured that Weekley weren’t going to score any more – at least until 20 minutes in to the second half - 3 -2 to Earls Barton and Weekley had started to re-group. The last 10 minutes of the game were pretty exciting. Tom took an 18 yard free kick which their keeper just managed to save. With Barton on the attack, keets took a shot but went wide past the right hand post, and a similar shot followed this from James - Brayfield had a go but his shot was cleared by a Weekley player. End to end stuff and Weekley won a free kick which was saved by Rhys. Seconds later a great pass from Dan to Keets down the left hand side led us on the attack again with both keets and James getting near misses just wide of the goal again. Just a couple of minutes remaining and Earls Barton won a corner. A great corner taken from Keets saw “our very own man in the air” – Ryan Brayfield header the ball home to make it 4 – 2. Although not much mention above, the midfield and back four battled tirelessly for 90% of the game this week. Concentrating on the back line more and calling for the pass in midfield was a breath of fresh air from the lads. Keep up the good work. There was a lot in contention for man of the match today but I decided on Tom Allen for his work rate throughout the game. |
