Rothwell Town 4 v Earls Barton 2
4th April 2009 |
|
The performance and result today showed just how far the Earls Barton girls have come this season, in the reverse fixture at the beginning of the season Rothwell thrashed Earls Barton 10-1 but today's game could easily have been a 6-6 draw. Rothwell started the brighter but it was Earls Barton who took the lead on 10 minutes when Lucy Green played the ball to Megan Watkins out on the left who beat the defender and rounder the keeper to slot the ball into the net. Unfortunately Barton did not hold on to the lead for long, Rothwell equalising two minutes later and taking the lead just a minute after. Barton then looked a bit shaky for a few minutes but managed to steady the ship and created a few chances of their own, Lucy Green unable to connect with a shot to lob the stranded keeper and Katie Newman unlucky to see her shot fly just over the cross bar. Rothwell too were guilty of mis firing in front of goal and so the score remained 2-1 at half time. After the break it was more end to end stuff Rothwell finding their third on 55 minutes. Barton were not going to lie down and Lucy Green pulled another goal back on 67 minutes firing across the box from the edge of the area. Rothwell scored their fourth from a free kick from a good 30 yards out, the ball hit high into the net giving our keeper no chance. Barton continued to battle and missed some good opportunities to level the game, one being from the penalty spot just before time when the ball was blasted high over the bar, but all in all it was a thoroughly entertaining game, one which this time Rothwell had to fight hard to win. There were some good performances from the Earls Barton girls today, Sarah Coulter-Brophy had another 'cool' game in defence as did Kerry Lawrence and captain Emily Baldry bossed the midfield but overall my player of the match award goes to Lucy Green, playing up front alongside goal machine Megan Watkins, who not only scored a good goal but also set up Megan for her goal and battled well up front. |
