EARLS BARTON UNITED FOOTBALL CLUB

Earls Barton 1 v Rothwell Town 1

3rd October 2009

This was a game of two halves with the wind having a big part to play. Barton had the better of the first half. Megan Watkins opened her account for the season with the first goal of the game after 9 minutes. Emily Baldry playing a good ball through the defence for Kelly Hewitt to lay off for Megan to run onto and slot past the keeper. Emily Baldry and player of the match Ashleigh Goodman were linking up well in the centre of the park and really controlling the game until Emily had to go off 5 minutes before half time after receiving a knock. Barton were unlucky not go further in front when Kelly Hewitt's free kick from the right hand edge of the area just whisked past the far post with nobody able to get a toe to it.

H-T 1-0

Within two minutes of the restart Rothwell were level. This, and the loss of Emily in the middle, seemed to knock the stuffing out of Barton for a while and we had to soak up a lot of pressure from the Rothwell girls who were obviously boosted by the goal. But credit to the whole squad, they kept working hard for one another, defended resolutely when they had to and even had a couple of chances to snatch it at the end. Katie Newman deserves a special mention for her display in goal today, although not called on to make a great number of saves, this was probably due to the way she commanded her area and helped the defence out when needed.

There were some very good performances from the Barton girls today against a very strong Rothwell team, if we can keep playing like that for the remainder of the season we wont go too far wrong.
