Daventry Drayton Grange 5 v Earls Barton 3
County Cup
18th October 2009 |
|
Football can be a very cruel game at times and today was one of those for Earls Barton. If we had one shot on goal we must have had 20 and but for the woodwork, some wild shooting and a great performance by the Grange keeper we should have won this game by half time. When Drayton Grange took the lead on 7 minutes it was against the run of play and after Barton had already missed 2 or 3 glorious chances to score. Megan Watkins drew the scores level on 23 minutes when she ran onto a through ball and rounded the keeper. Megan and Kelly Hewitt were causing the Grange defence problems all game but finding it hard to beat the keeper. Drayton took the lead again on 29 minutes after a mix up in the Barton 6 yard box and four minutes later went further ahead. H-T 3-1 After the break it was much of the same, Barton created chance after chance but could not finish them, Grange created a few and found the back of the net each time. Kelly Hewitt finally scored when she flicked a corner kick over the defence and over the top of the keeper. Barton then pushed for an equaliser but it was Grange who scored the next goal. Megan Watkins did pull another back for Barton but time was running out and Grange finished off the tie when they scored direct from a corner with almost the last kick of the game. It was hard to criticise the girls today,on another day the chances we created would have gone in,and with several players playing/missing due to illness they all did well under the circumstances. Player of the match for Earls Barton today Kerry Lawrence. |
